Family Directed Services
As a Medicaid Waiver Provider in Indiana we employ a family-driven and directed service model. This approach establishes a commitment to quality that is not always found in human services. Most of the Individuals We Serve and their families have expressed a high level of satisfaction and empowerment. Many have been able to achieve a better quality of life than they had with previous providers.
Why the name Person First?
People who have Developmental or Intellectual Disabilities have long been marginalized and devalued - placed in group/institutional settings and treated more like "things" rather than contributing members of society. Upholding the dignity of an Individual, no matter who he or she is, requires recognizing the value of a person as a human being, with human rights, human feelings, and with human goals and dreams. Providing environments and approaches which maintain dignity requires a Person First mentality from service providers. Our name is a constant reminder of this.
For Our Families
Families who have a relative with disabilities have long struggled with what is the best way to get the person's service needs met. Many have witnessed an unresponsive and uncaring system. Traditional models of staffing usually consists of assigning low-paid strangers, quickly trained and assigned to Individuals, often without even a realistic understanding of the important responsibilities expected of them. This results in mediocre care, at best. When we consider how important it is to find the best people for the job, it is clear that the human service industry is failing in its responsibilities.
The family directed model can meet this important need. This is not for every family. However for familieis who want to be involved in the day-to-day care of the Individual, who know caregivers who they want working with their loved one, and families who can commit to the process by which a person is served, this service model makes sense.
